  • Adoption Services | Catholic Human Services

Catholic Human Services has been providing adoption services since 1980. We were pioneers and national leaders in the open adoption movement and have provided this approach to adoption longer than any other agency in the country. Adoption Services An Individualized Parent-Child Approach Catholic Human Services has been providing adoption services since 1980. We were pioneers and national leaders in the open adoption movement and have provided this approach to adoption longer than any other agency in the country. Simply put, open adoption promotes ongoing relationships between adopted children and their birth families. We are proud to have arranged close to 600 infant adoptions across northern Michigan. Birthparent? If you are pregnant and considering adoption, you can trust CHS to: Provide options counseling as you explore the best plan for your baby. Respond to your concerns thoroughly and honestly. Honor your choices. Ensure you fully understand adoption if you are considering this plan. Prospective adoptive parents? If you want to give a loving home to a baby, you can trust CHS to: Be welcoming and answer your questions. Provide a complete understanding of our program. Be transparent with costs and processes. Call us at 231-590-8337 or fill out the contact form, and we will contact you. Answers to frequently asked questions for both the birth parents and adoptive parents are below. FAQs for Birth Parents FAQs for Birth Parents Adoption FAQs Are the services for birth parents at CHS free? Yes. There are no fees or costs at any time. Can CHS help with ongoing expenses during the pregnancy? Yes. We'll assess your financial situation to help you cover basic medical costs, clothing, and housing. All financial support goes through the agency. No money changes hands between adoptive and birth families. Do I have to be Catholic? No, we provide services to all regardless of faith. How much control do I have in an adoption plan? You are in control every step of the way. Our job is to support and guide you to follow your plan for yourself and your child. You are welcome to meet as many families in our pool as you want before you make a selection. You decide who will attend the birth. You determine the level of openness that's right for you. You will choose how often to visit and work out with the adoptive family, exchanging emails, phone calls, and pictures in advance. If I choose adoption, does it have to be open?" No. Your privacy is always respected. We hope that you will want to stay in touch after you meet your selected adoptive family. We believe that it's important for adopted children to have the knowledge and a sense of their birth heritage whenever possible. Can I receive services from CHS even if I might not choose adoption? Yes. Dealing with an unplanned pregnancy can be complex and confusing. We're here to help you sort out your situation and support you in whatever direction you decide. How much will I know about the adoptive family? Every waiting family creates a portfolio full of pictures and detailed information so that you can get a feeling for them before you meet. We will also provide you the family's home study report that details their family backgrounds, careers, interests, etc. What "qualifications" must an adoptive couple meet before they are accepted?" Every family goes through an educational process and a home study. The home study is conducted in their home and considers their motivation, marriage, the family of origin, thoughts on raising children, and their ideas about adoption. Where do the adoptive families live? Adoptive families live right here in northern Michigan. We feel that open adoption relationships can work best when adoptive and birth families don't have to travel great distances to see each other. Can the birth father be involved? Yes. Information about both birth parents will be important. Birth parents being involved and working together as a team can be very positive for the child if the situation is right and birth parents agree. Will I be able to see my baby in the hospital? Absolutely! We hope you will spend lots of time with your baby, and it's vital for you to greet your child and celebrate their arrival. Will I have to go to court? Yes. The judge is your protector and will make sure everything is done correctly. What if I change my mind? It's crucial for you to understand how this works. The temporary papers signed in the hospital are easily set aside. You are entirely free to change course before signing documents in court (about four weeks following birth). Your baby would be returned to you. However, once you sign the consent papers in court, your parental rights will be terminated. By law, you would have 21 days to appeal. FAQs for Adoptive Parents FAQs for Adoptive Parents Adoption FAQs 2 How long is the average waiting period to adopt through CHS? The average wait is between 12 to 18 months. The wait time depends entirely on being selected by birth parents. How many children does CHS place? We have placed close to 600 infants since our first adoption in 1980 What are your eligibility requirements? The basic requirements: 1. Marriage: Applicants should be married for at least two years. 2. Residency: Adoptive families must reside in northern Lower Michigan. 3. Religion: We are receptive to all families regardless of faith. 4. Housing: Adoptive families must live in a clean, safe place with sufficient space to promote wholesome family life. 5. Health: Adoptive parents must have the usual life expectancy and demonstrate emotional and mental stability. 6. Age: There are no age restrictions for married couples. How much does the program cost? We are a non-profit agency, and our fees continue to be among the least expensive of all agencies in Michigan. We will be glad to discuss costs with you. What is open adoption? Birthparents choose the adoptive family that they want to raise their child. The adoptive family and the birth parents create a plan for ongoing visits and the exchange of photos, letters, etc. Is open adoption co-parenting? No. The adoptive parents are the legal and emotional parents. Openness does not detract from the permanency of parenting; instead, it establishes an atmosphere of sincerity in which the ongoing needs of all parties are honored. What if we're unsure about open adoption? Most applicants come to CHS with apprehensions about open adoption. Once they get a better understanding through our classes, most people come to embrace this approach. How is the adoptive family chosen? Birthparents choose the adoptive family. All of our prospective adoptive couples create portfolios full of pictures and information that provide birth parents an accurate overview of who they are. Birth parents also review the agency's home study report for each waiting family. How often do birth parents change their minds? Our experience suggests that about 15% of the time, birth families change their thinking about adoption around the time of delivery. The adoption process is complete once the legal forms have been signed during a court session, usually about four weeks after the baby is born.

According to a recent Gallup survey, the pandemic has created record levels of worry, stress, and depression throughout the American workforce. Roughly seven in 10 employees are struggling or suffering, rather than thriving, in their overall lives. That results in a large portion of employees disengaging at work. This lack of engagement costs the global economy nearly 10% of GDP, in lost productivity each year (Gallup, 2021). As a northern Michigan business owner/executive, you have the power to make things a bit better. Invest in your employees' well-being by providing CHS's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to them.
